Essential Bootleg - The Replacements - Live @ Grant Park Chicago July 4th 1991

AKA “It Ain’t Over ‘Til The Fat Roadies Play."
AKA The LAST Replacement's Show.

It's one helluva ride providing most of my favorite Replacements material isn't played. Founding member Bob Stinson had been gone for nearly 5 years at this point. This wasn't announced as their last show it just happened to play out that way and honestly what better way than a 4th of July party in Chicago. The recording must be a soundboard master and is top notch. Judging from the crowd extreme levels of debaucherous drunkenness were rampant.

What's great about Hootenanny is the band switches instruments and as they depart from the stage, and one by one, they are replaced by the road crew. Prior this they really show how their last album, All Shook Down, really was an underrated piece of Replacements material. This is a great listen.

1. “I Will Dare”
2. “Bent Out of Shape”
3. “Achin’ to Be”
4. “Merry Go Round”
5. “Happy Town”
6. “Swinging Party”
7. “One Wink at a Time”
8. “Waitress in the Sky”
9. “When It Began”
10. “Someone Take the Wheel”
11. “Talent Show”
12. “Nobody”
13. “Another Girl, Another Planet”
14. “Hey Good Lookin’”
15. “I’ll Be You”
16. “I Don’t Know”

Essential MP3 - Elliott Smith - Angeles (Alternate Version)

Well we're back by popular demand! I hope that everyone has had a killer summer and either you're getting ready for school or sweating your balls off on a construction site. Kill Rock Stars, the label which hosted much of Elliott Smiths work, have been digging in their archives to share alternate takes and demos. Either/Or is a album that is pivotal in my life and Angeles has always been the gem within it. I really like the alternate, the singing is less hushed and you can really hear the lyrics. Go and support this even tho he's dead.

Essential MP3 - Mineral - Slower

Representing the heyday of mid-90's Crank! records, Mineral cause a buzz at the time and often were likened to other 90's indie pioneers as Promise Ring and Sunny Day Real Estate. Originally from Houston, the band relocated to Austin for the 6 day recording of The Power of Failure, released January 1997.This song is powerful one. It used to be one of those songs that got stuck on repeat and I still find lasting value within it.

Essential Mini Mix - DK - Blockhead Mini Mix

In honor of Blockhead's triumphant new throwback album Interludes After Midnight Solid Steel's DK has set up a powerful minimix that showcases the blendability, gritty city beats, and of the course the piano that highlight one of my favorite albums of the year.

Essential MP3 - Mount Kimbie - Before I Move Off

When I first heard London's duo Mount Kimbie I truly thought that they might liberate the trenches of dubstep or nustep from brostep. Its like a 12 step elimination program. I don't really like dubstep, especially the shit you hear out here on the canadian coast. Shows upon shows of offbeat angry saw bass. I've always been a drum and bass warrior in my heart.

Needless to say I do enjoy some that fall under the dubstep moniker. Mount Kimbie, Jamie XX, Koreless, and Ramanadaman grace that list. Here's a standout track from 2010's magical album Crooks and Lovers.

UPDATE - Every Song A Revolution - The Hated Compilation - 2011

UPDATE 11.2012 - I've gathered the correct album art for the compilation. It's just a chopped up cover of a old early 20th century pulp novel. Also corrected the track numbers and order. I've noticed a fair bit of activity around this lately which prompted me to take a course of proper action. I also removed the blogged and quartered link as its all shut down.

The Hated's music has hit me deep. This stuff is truly amazing. I had always heard about them often brought up in conversations with Moss Icon, as they two bands were both from Annopolis, they practiced together, partied together, and played shows together. A few years ago Blogged and Quartered put up a three part The Hated Discography. There is so much amazing music lost in space here. So i put together the best starting point ever. This is the definitive The Hated Collection for people who need a good set off point. Grab the .zip below the tracklist. Oh yeah, and be sure to check out some of the old flyers I found scouring the web, especially the one with Fugazi and Shudder to Think. What a good show that would have been.

1- Underground
2- Anonymous Descriptions of Uncontrollable Urges
3- Pride and Confusion
4- Damned Heart
5-Return
6- What Was Behind
7- Promises
8- Someone
9- T.S. Eliot
10- Departure
11- Every Song
12- Miggys Delight
13- No More We Cry
14- Away
15- Echos of Whistle Tree Park
16 - Plastic Boat

LetterstoTumTum Exclusive - D.Mekca Jamz - Planet Asia Remix + More

D.Mekca Jamz has been a good buddy of mine for years but for over a decade now he has been churning out some of the sickest hip hop instrumentals and remixes on the West Coast. Acting as the lead production and one of the stage bombing emcees in the former (yet sensational) local group Illy Pros the last year has been a year of refocus and direction in more of a solo endeavor. I'm lucky he sends me beats. He's really on an incredible wave. What have here is a bombing cerebral remix of a heavy ass hitting Asia rhyme infestation.

Considering his beats are worth their weight in gold I can't drop MP3s of all the tracks but Mekca has conviently upload some sickness to You Tube which I will now translate to you.

Essential 7" - 88 Fingers Louie - Wanted

One of the most forgotten and least talked about 'mainstream' punk bands from the 90's is Chicago's 88 Fingers Louie. I use hesitate to use 'mainstream' because it's not like these guys sold out to a major label or anything. I just think of more mainstream 90's punk to be bands signed to the large underground labels like Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph, Hopeless, etc.

88 Fingers Louie often got tagged in the same group as Lagwagon or Strung Out but for some reason never seemed to empress as much. I find them quite different. Remember two guys from this group went on to form the stadium rock shock and awe of Rise Against. Theres so good hardcore in the veins here, but a some feeling as well.

This is their legendary second EP released in 1993 I believe. Blink is one of my favs for 90s punk in general.

Essential MP3 - Braid - A Dozen Roses

A great song from Braid's (not Braids) third album Frame and Canvas. A Dozen Roses is the song. Been feeling alot of this post-hardcore lately. Long summerish nights... i can't imagine what eternal sun or dark must be like. Glad I don't live that far up north.

Essential New Mix - Bonobo Solid Steel Mix 2012

Bonobo has returned to the realm of Solid Steel to provide a seamless blissful sonic experience. His first Solid Steel mix (which I am ironically listening to right now, and i was searching the internet for this older tracklist and this popped up) was that of legendary status. Great drums, worldy samples, again excelent beats and something that got right in your psyche. Similar to early Blockhead .Thank you universe you have provided again. Another great mix from Ninja on the the wheels of steel, Bonobo. Always nothing but the best from that world.

2 Essential KIss Covers / Replacements Black DIamond / Red House Painters Shock Me

Double blast from the past covering songs that were blasts from the past! I know that sounds stupid but I think it makes sense!

First up we have Mark Kozelek fronting his suave and cute little 90's slocore band Red House Painters. What I love with this cover is it really showcases Kozelek's knack for covering a song but doing it in a way thats complelely unlike the original. Its like he goes beyond the typical cover. Remember he did a whole album of Modest Mouse covers that sound nothing like Modest Mouse

Red House Painters Shock Me MP3

This little gem was taked from the legendary 1984 release of Let It Be. One of my favorite records ever. They cover this song in hardcore vein, which on the album, is perfect for general progression of the songs and is a great offsetting song to 'unsatisfied' or 'answering machine'.

The Replacements Black Diamond MP3

Well there are two great and different covers of Kiss songs! The first tape I ever bought was a Kiss tape (Destroyer to be exact) and while I still love that album I could do without some of the other ones. I don't think I've purposely listened to Kiss for a decade now.

Essential 7" - Moss Icon - Mahpiua Luta

Filled with emotion and fervor, Mahpiua Luta is a great example of what makes Moss Icon still an influential band today. I think the term post-hardcore really fits this record well. Tony Vances poetic rambles are paired perfectly with the music. You can really see marriage of the two. It takes time for bands to find their sound, and some of the best music we end up with in the end are those who take those artistic and stylistic stabs in the dark.  I heard Moss Icon are doing a reunion show at a hardcore/metal fest in Austin this summer. Fuck I wish I could go. Wow.

Essential Music - Blouse

Portland's Blouse has been a band making ripples on the West Coast lately. The 80's tinged nostalgic analog feel that gives their music such a signature was first a series of records releases that, save for a b-sde and one 7 inch, then made its way to a beautiful full legnth self titled release last year. The music has such a warm old feeling it makes my psyche think I heard some of these songs on the radio 20 years ago as a child. Obviously this is not true however the music is something to be said for itself. Its like a hot tub time machine.

Essential Unreleased Album - Neil Young - Chrome Dreams

Originally bootlegged off an authentic acetate of Neil Youngs, Chrome Dreams still today baffles me in the 30 plus years of this existance they never tried to release it. Because its exceptional, its got that late 70's Neil Young sound and still to this date tracks that never saw an official release.  Ripped from FLAC so you know its the highest quality.

Essential New MP3 - El-P - The Full Retard

Ok I'm sure lots of you have heard this new El-P track, but for those who haven't its a great one. El-P, one of the leaders of renegade rap crew The Weathermen and owner of the now de-funct Def Jux label (which provided a decade of great hip hop) has been on top in the underground and since his last release 'I'll Sleep When You're Dead' relatively quiet. Maybe it has to do with his label sinking . I thought he made alot of money on that shit I wonder how it went under. Maybe they'll make a documentary.

Essential MP3 - Studio Pressure - Relics (Plaid Remix)

One of my all time spine tingling electronic remixes by the mighty Plaid. From bassline to synth this track has it all and I hope everyone uses it as some decent energy to go and enjoy the beginning of what I feel will be a spectacular weekend. Much love everyone.

Essential Tumblr - Typewritten

Typewritten is a simple tumblr site that showcases great phrases, sayings, lyrics, and quotes transformed into images depicting all of the integrity of staring at fresh ink off a old fashioned typewritter. You can even submit your own suggestions to a webmaster.

It really showcases the beauty of the words I've grown quite fond of this internet oasis. There's a great variety of quotes and poems in the archive worth checking out.

RIP Blogged and Quartered

In the light of the current Mediafire fiasco , which has them basically eliminating some of the best blogs in existance simply because of a couple rare copywritten albums that you could never find anyways, we have lost Blogged and Quartered, the premier stop on the internet for amazing punk/hardcore demos and albums that were otherwise lost in the folds of time.

Stormy did a great job running the blog from the overall spectrum of rare music he provided and the detailed and informative write up right down on the the point. Two bands in particular that had a profound impact on me growing up were without a doubt Moss Icon and The Hated. Two early Annapolis post-hardcore emotive groups that I feel helped shape alot of things and even today aren't getting the recognition they deserve. Its not like this music is even available for purchase. He put up complete discography's, and especially for a group like The Hated somehow obtain master recordings (obviously from the never to be released Troubleman collection) and provide them to the people is amazing. Not to mention countless other bands I was turned onto from the blog including Funeral Oration, Jawbreaker, Live Joy Division and Rites of Spring, and the list goes on.

Im gonna try to get some of this music back to you its just gonna take some time. Im really busy with this job, the sun is shining and makes me want to get out and really take advantage of this great life. I love Victoria. Anyways rest in peace Blogged and Quartered, thank you deeply from the corners of out hearts.

Essential MP3 - Kurt Vile - The Creature

Founding cornerstone of The War on Drugs and acoustic futuroso Kurt Vile provides a hypnotizing canvas with his incredible guitar skill and an airy ethereal feel with his lyrics on The Creature. Its just great music all around. Released on the deluxe edition of one of 2011's best albums Smoke Ring for My Halo don't sleep on this essential track.

Stream - Death Grips - The Money Store

Pseudo-power violent Sacramento razor walking rappers Death Grips have just put their new album, The Money Store up on their soundcloud to all to stream. While I did like Ex-Miliarty, their debut mixtape released last year, it was still a little crazy. This is still crazy, but maybe a little less aggressive. These guys are dope. Get Got, the albums opener showcases this new style.

The album is due for release on Epic Records later this year. I know that they just signed a deal with them, and are playing at Coachella among other things, but I wonder if any other labels, especially small ones made a move on them.

MP3 - Nicholas Jaar - With Just One Glance

I apologize for the lack of posting I've been adjusting to this new job and while the pay cheques are nice the commercial aspect mega blows. Haven't been listening to a ton of new music lately, more of a focus on older gems but this Nicholas Jaar guy is a completely next level sort of musician. I believe he will continue to have quite the career. He has a great FACT mix under his belt as well.

Essential MP3 - The Weakerthans - This Is a Firedoor Never Leave Open

There's something to be said for John K. Samson. Whether it's being key part in (probably other than DOA and Nomeansno) the biggest and greatest canadian punk band ever Propagandhi,  or being the founding father and chief songwriter for The Weakerthans which are honestly probably one of the greatest sounds to come out of this great country in the last 15 years.

This Is A Firedoor, Never Leave Open is taken off 2000's epic full length Left and Leaving. Chart Magazine called it the 6th greatest Canadian album of all time. This is a clear display of  his genius lyrics and chord progressions.

New Mix - Nosaj Thing - Mary Anne Hobbs

He ripped it at at last years Rifflandia and has been one a big player of the Brainfeeder crew in LA. Wicked airy spaced out beats and tons of unreleased music and dubs are packed into this short mix that I bet you'll throw on repeat. This will be in steady rotation for awhile.

TRACKLIST:
Nosaj Thing – Sci (Rough)
Nosaj Thing – Eclipse/Blue Feat. Kazu Makino
Nosaj Thing x Architeq – Untitled
D Tiberio – Raver 5
Jacques Green – iwont132
Jamie xx – Touch Me
Lunice – Superman OG
Machinedrum – A New Meaning (Rough)
Jon Wayne – Jackknifee
Nosaj Thing x Teebs – Untitled
Nosaj Thing x Kendrick Lamar – Cloud 10 Rework

Up and Coming - First Ait Kit - The King of the World

From their recent release The Lion's Roar. Watch out for this Swedish Duo. Bright Eyes makes an appearance on the album and its heralded great reviews. The music has a good light feel, and I've been enjoying it.

Essential Demo - Pixies - Doolittle Demos Remaster

I've seen The Pixies perform Doolittle in its entirety. Alot of people over the last two years have been as they have been extensively touring and cashing in on its greatness. I appreciate it, I mean, everyone loves to hear where their artists currently are at but in the case of some bands just play the essential stuff to me.

It's funny how we attach our moments and feelings with music. There is stuff that went on in my life when I saw The Pixies play that I will always attach to the music. Unfortunately not the greatest times but still a complete learning experience.

I found this over at Teenage Dogs In Trouble , a great Winnipeg based blog.

Flashback MP3 - Plaid - Gel Lab

Growing up involved alot of Ninja Tune and Warp Records. Still some of the more expansive and thoughtful experimental electronic was being created. You'd have artists like Plaid, Squarepusher, Autechre, etc etc that are true diverse electronic artists. Not ever sticking to the same sound or structuce for too long.

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. And other than maybe a special Aphex Twin song (those who know will know what I'm talking about) this is easily topping my lists.

Essential 7" - Moss Icon - Greta Garbo 7"

Well Mr. Jack Crawford, this one's for you. Hanging out in Belize I had many great in depth conversations with this invigorating young man. So here's that lo-fi garagey emotional punkish 7" from 1988 that pushed to eventually get a 'What They Lack' tattoo (pictures of the ink below the download). It might not be what these current ears wanna hear but in the 1990's this stuff really affected me in a positive way.

This is the best quality I could get and I'm pretty sure it's as close to a master as possible. Moss Icon (along with The Hated) are two of the most influential bands that never got their stuff properly re-released which is a shame not only because of the monetary gain they deserve to have (but never could back in the day due to poor distribution deals) but moreso because of the great music that is getting lost in the folds of time.

Enjoy this forgotton classic :)

1 - Hate in Me - 2:47
2 - What They Lack - 2:24
3 - Im Back Sleeping, Or Eating, Or..  - 3:07
4 - Kiss the Girls - 2:19
